40-plus years of using cleaner-burning propane in our home-delivery fleet

Jan. 26, 2016 —At The Schwan Food Company, we have an extremely unique fleet of trucks within our home-delivery business.

Of the thousands of vehicles that Schwan’s Home Service route sales representatives operate throughout the country, more than 70 percent of them run on liquid propane — an approved alternative fuel that burns more cleanly than traditional fossil fuels.

Our history with propane dates back more than 40 years. In the 1970s, the founder of the company, Marvin Schwan, was looking for an option to break his fleet’s dependence on foreign oil. At the time, there were major concerns about oil embargoes and potential oil shortages that would hurt his delivery business. To ensure a secure source of fuel, he began switching his home-delivery fleet to propane.

Throughout the years, we have found additional benefits to using propane. It provides a secure, domestic source of fuel, our trucks run more quietly (which is good for our customers) and cleanly (which is good for the environment). In fact, by burning propane in the majority of our trucks rather than diesel in 2014, the company avoided the emission of more than 25,161 tons of greenhouse gases. Plus, over time, we have found the fuel to be much more economical.

After all of these years, we remain committed to using propane in our fleet and reviewing all options that will make us run efficiently and cleanly.
