Thank you to our team members for joining the fight against hunger

Jan. 14, 2016 — Whether it’s work done through The Schwan Food Company (and its subsidiaries) or the Schwan’s Corporate Giving Foundation, one of our goals in charitable giving is to assist in the fight against hunger.

For several years, we have partnered with organizations such as Feeding America to assist in this cause, and for three consecutive years, we have donated more than 1 million pounds of food to the organization and its affiliated food banks.

During Feeding America’s past fiscal year, the food we have donated was distributed to 25 food banks in 18 states. We have been honored to participate in these efforts, but we have also been extremely proud of employees who take it upon themselves to volunteer their time to join the fight against hunger.

Here have been some of the more recent volunteer efforts by employees throughout our company:

Team members volunteer to harvest
fruits and veggies.

  • Some of our Minnesota-based employees volunteered at Holmberg Orchard, harvesting squash and apples for The Food Group, a nonprofit organization working to end hunger. The teams collected more than 13,000 pounds of food. It’s the fifth-consecutive year employees participated in the program.
  • Team members based at our production facility in Stilwell, Oklahoma, volunteered their time toward packing food for school children through the Adair County Resource Center’s backpack program.
  • Team members at our production facility in Florence, Kentucky, volunteered their time at The Giving Fields (a project of the Freestore Foodbank) in Melbourne, Kentucky. The group helped pick peppers, green beans, squash, cucumbers and tomatoes, which were distributed to families in the area.
  • Team members at our office in Bloomington, Minnesota, volunteered their time toward raising approximately $18,000 for Second Harvest Heartland, the Upper Midwest’s largest hunger relief organization. The effort was matched dollar-for-dollar by the Schwan’s Corporate Giving Foundation.
  • Teams from Bloomington, Minnesota, volunteered a total of 252 hours and packed 43,960 pounds of food in 2015 for Second Harvest Heartland. In one event this fall, more than 20 employees in Bloomington, Minnesota, volunteered their time to help sort and re-package nearly 12,500 pounds of food at food shelf.  And, more recently, home-delivery employees from the same location helped pack nearly 13,500 pounds of food for area food shelves.

Again, a big thanks goes out to all of our team members out there who are joining the fight against hunger. Keep up the great work!
